By Women, About Women

This past year I read 104 books. No, I’m not bragging. Yes, I know, I’m demented. A lot of those books were written by women, a rich tapestry that combined Medusa-like personalities, Medea-like traits, humor, wits, and lots of empowerment. Many times, I enjoyed the representation of women in fiction. Others I wanted to chuck the book out the window.

So, I made a list, so you don’t have to. Here’s some books I loved written by women about women.

  1. Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
  2. Jane Eyre – Charlotte Brontë
  3. Rebecca– Daphne du Maurier
  4. A Room of One’s Own – Virginia Woolf
  5. Little Women – Louisa May Alcott
  6. Ines del Alma Mia – Isabel Allende (trans. “Ines of My Soul” )
  7. Getting Lost – Annie Ernaux
  8. I Will Write to Avenge my People – Annie Ernaux
  9. Mujeres del Alma Mía – Isabel Allende (trans. “The Soul of a Woman”)
  10. The Help – Kathryn Stockett
  11. Elektra -Jennifer Saint
  12. Ariadne -Jennifer Saint
  13. The Penelopiad – Margaret Atwood
  14. Play It as It Lays – Joan Didion
  15. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue – V.E. Schwab
  16. The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood

These are just a few examples. Some male writers are able to produce riveting female characters, but that is something to be touched on later. Happy reading!
